Making CrossFit Bigger than CrossFit: Musana

By Leah Hosburgh

Say what you want about CrossFit, in my opinion, that there are a couple things that are rare and powerful about it: 1. It works. I'm amazed at the transformation I see everyday in our gym. 2. The community. No one can rally like a group of CrossFitters can.

My passion has always been to see the heart unbound, the spirit unleashed, and the mind transformed in myself and the people around me. Surprisingly, something as simple as this fitness program has the capability to do this in small ways, and sometimes huge ways. It's not God, but this tight-knit community offers  up opportunities to lift each other up in ways that go above and beyond working out. So, here's an opportunity. One of our members, Melia Syed, will be traveling to Uganda to a wonderful place, called Musana Community Development Organization. (I've also had the amazing opportunity to go to Musana, and wrote about it on my personal blog.) She needs our help getting there. We will be hosting a fundraiser WOD at NoCoast, January 17th, at 9:00am. All are welcome. Here is more about her and the trip she plans to take in February:

My name is Melia Syed. I’ve been doing CrossFit for over 3 years. I love this community. I am wife to Andrew and mom to Tanner (18) and Konner (14). I am also a first grade teacher at Ryan Elementary in Lafayette. I am thrilled to share with you an amazing opportunity I have been given. I was chosen, along with 14 other educators who attend the Flatirons Community Church, to travel as a team to Iganga, Uganda to provide teacher training at Musana Community Development Organization.
Musana thrives to SHINE in the community Iganga, Uganda.  Musana Sustainably gives Hope to vulnerable children and widows by Inspiring, eNlightening, and Empowering them to make a difference in their communities.- S.H.I.N.E.  Musana provides education for more than 430 students.  Check it out at http://musana.org/.

I feel privileged to be part of this team of experts.  Musana’s teachers are open and inviting professional development.  I feel blessed to be able to use my gift and passion of teaching to benefit a great cause and touch even more children than the students I have already taught the past 12 years.  It feels exponential!

Our team leaves Feb. 12th and returns Feb. 23rd. I would love for YOU to be part of this trip via my own story and the lives of the children in Musana.  I need to raise $2900.

Any amount of monetary gift will be gratefully appreciated!  Donations are tax deductible.  Cash or checks should be made out and mailed to:
